Watch for water sitting on the surface instead of soaking in, a spongy feel underfoot, or patches that stay thin no matter how often you mow and feed it. A thin layer of thatch is normal, but once it builds up past about a centimetre, it starts choking the grass underneath, leading to soggy patches, sponginess, and thinning despite good care. Those are the signs a lawn needs dethatching before it gets any worse.
Both depend on the size and condition of the lawn rather than a flat rate. A heavily thatched lawn takes longer to clear than a lightly used one, and we price fertilising by area.
