Every job starts the same way: a full fence pressure wash to remove dirt, moss, and flaking paint, then we treat what's left before anything goes back on. We never skip this step, because a proper pressure-wash fence clean is what makes the paint or stain last. If the timber's tired rather than just dirty, repairs or board replacement come before painting or staining. After that, most fence maintenance is just keeping on top of it every few years rather than starting from scratch. If the same job includes a deck, we can usually handle the deck and fence staining and painting together in the same visit.

It depends on the timber, its condition and how it has been treated before. Paint gives the widest colour range and the crispest, most opaque finish, but it sits on top of the timber and will need stripping back if it starts to peel. Stain soaks into the wood, shows the grain, and is usually easier to freshen up next time round because there's no film to fail. For most Auckland properties, we'd lean towards fence staining unless you specifically want a solid colour. We will look at it and tell you which will actually last on your fence.

Make sure whoever you use actually washes and treats the timber before staining. Stain applied straight over dirt, moss, or an old flaking finish won't last, no matter how good the product is. That prep work is most of the job; any fence staining contractors worth using should build it into the quote as standard, not as an optional extra.
